The river was like an abyss, bottomless. Even the water splashes were like lead, heavy as a thousand catties.
Before they were even close, the group could sense an extremely heavy pressure invade all of their acupoints.
“Could this be the legendary Weak River?” Shi Xuan gasped.
The Weak River was quite famous in Primordial World. Rumor had it that this river was as black as ink, a stark contrast to other ordinary rivers. Normal rivers were always flowing, able to trigger perilous situations. Cultivators could cross rivers by either canoe or boat, but the Weak River had the power of ten thousand catties. Let alone boats, even a feather would sink.
Once a cultivator fell into the Weak River’s depths, unless you had formidable abilities, even a God Transformation Truth Return cultivator would be destroyed. To a cultivator, the Weak River was a very frightening existence. Many ancient realms and secret realms contained Weak Water to deter cultivators from approaching.
Qi Lin looked around. Kunlun’s Weak River was extremely wide, at least a hundred li. The other bank had immense, faintly discernible snowy peaks, and there was also a dim moon. This mountain was larger and more impressive than any of Western Kunlun’s peaks.
Even though it was very far, the chilling and sacred intent issued from the mountain was enough to make one prostrate in worship. Without a doubt, that place should be main palace of the Kunlun Void, the Jade Void Peak.
Everyone drew near the Weak River and immediately sensed their progress slow significantly. They had no choice but to circulate their magical energy to withstand this pressure. However, doing so proved extremely taxing for cultivators.
“A mere river cannot stop us.” Xuanxuzi sneered, not believing this.
He leapt up and flew towards the other bank. He used an escape technique known as the “Dark Light Void Escape Technique.” Once the escape technique activated, his body was like an aurora, able to flit through empty space extremely quickly.
But he had only just entered the air, when Xuanxuzi’s expression immediately changed. A frightening pressure squeezed him from all directions, and every drop of that heavy water carried enormous weight as they penetrated into his pores. No matter how Xuanxuzi used his magical energy, the droplets came into his pores faster than he could expel them.
These water droplets were like the ability, “One Origin Heavy Water.” Not even Xuanxuzi’s Primordial Infant could withstand it. After a few more moments, he promptly retreated and landed back on the bank, finally averting this disaster.
“How can this be, it is strong.” Xuanxuzi sensed the obstruction.
“Allow me to try.” Gan Man strode forth. This Great Shaman Clan member cultivated formidable strength, but he also sensed the difficulty in moving his feet forward, as if he was stuck in mud.
Gan Man walked to the Weak River’s edge. He turned his wrist and produced a magic treasure.
This treasure was a wooden boat. Its body was fabricated from ten thousand year old iron hemlock. It was impervious to blades and could break through the most perilous of situations.
Gan Man moved and placed the boat into the Weak River. At first, the boat broke the water’s surface, giving them all hope, but after traveling a few moments, the boat sank without warning like a ten thousand catty boulder. However, not a single ripple had appeared. Then, the boat submerged completely, and no matter how Gan Man tried, he could no longer sense it.
Gan Man’s expression turned dark, a bit unsightly.
“I will try the Water-parting Night Pearl.” Shi Xuan stepped out to try. She brought out a magic treasure, the Water-parting Night Pearl. This treasure could part waters, and she had relied on it on her journey to Western Kunlun to avert many dangers on the seas.
But without any room for doubt, the Water-splitting Night Pearl was also unable to produce a ripple in the Weak River. In the end, the pearl sank into the water like a stone into the sea.
Seeing that three of their tricks to cross the water and failed, Xuanxuzi, Gan Man, and Shi Xuan turned to the party’s sole Divine Name, Hou Yi. As for Qi Lin and Chang, they did not feel they could do anything about this.
The woman was silent. Her expression was ice-cold as she stepped to the edge of the river, her Divine Energy giving her a bit more ease compared to the others.
“Elder Sister Hou Yi, why not try your Destiny.” Shi Xuan said.
Hou Yi grunted. She produced her Divine Weapon, a completely red bow named “Sunset Over Western Hill.”1
Hou Yi drew back the string, her Divine Energy forming an arrow that she loosed.
The crimson arrow-light scorched everyone’s vision. That arrow skimmed over the Weak River, burning and seething. The Weak River showed signs of evaporating.
Hou Yi’s Destiny was to shoot Sun Arrows. The arrow-lights were like the sun itself, extremely bright, extremely intense, and extremely fierce. This Sun Arrow flew forth, but as it flew, the arrow-light grew weaker and weaker. Moments later, it finally extinguished and vanished.
Hou Yi shook her head and pursed her lips tightly, very dissatisfied. She fired several arrows consecutively, but they all had the same result.
“How, even Elder Sister Hou Yi’s Divine Arrows cannot be shot across.” Shi Xuan was shaken.
Xuanxuzi said: “I fear this Weak River is far more formidable than we have imagined.”
“What do we do now, can it be we must give up?” Shi Xuan was unreconciled. They had gone through myriad dangers to reach this place and did not want to waste all of their efforts up until now just because of this damned river.
But the reality was in front of them. The group used every trick they had, but it was no use.
“Since the Queen Mother Of The West has set this trial and previous cultivators have passed, there must be a way.” Qi Lin looked at the Weak River, pensive.
“Easy for you to say. When even I cannot cross, do you think you, a Golden Core cultivator, can be so abnormal to do so?” Xuanxuzi sneered.
Qi Lin shrugged. This cultivator had significant bias against him: “I said there was a way, not that I was able to cross.”
“En, let us devise other ways, there must be some secret.” Shi Xuan bit her lip, not willing to accept this fact.
Hou Yi nodded; they had no other choice.
Everyone searched for clues in the forest near the Weak River, to see whether or not there was a magic formation, but the monolithic palaces standing before them were like tombstones facing the distant Jade Void Peak, sending chills down their spine.
Qi Lin could not help but recall a cemetery. Although these palaces were constructed very exquisitely, they were even more desolate than a graveyard when combined with the deathly atmosphere of the Weak River.
“Could there be some sort of principle behind these prayer palaces?” Chang asked, perceiving there was something different about these palaces.
The others also took notice. They had already searched these abandoned ruins, but other than finding a few skeletons, they found nothing of use.
It was strange that there would be such a large cluster of tombs on the mountaintop near the Weak River.
“I think these were built by cultivators who came here in the past. They’re just like us, constructing these after already exhausting their options.” Qi Lin hypothesized.
Gan Man did not understand. Shi Xuan asked what this meant.
“Cultivators were unable to cross the Weak River and consequently construct prayer palaces here. They prayed facing the Kunlun Void…Hoping to move the Queen Mother Of The West.” Qi Lin very quickly outlined his thoughts.
Hearing his analysis, everyone was relieved.
“This means we are not out of options yet.” Xuanxuzi’s expression was even more unsightly. This place had hundred upon thousands of these dilapidated palaces. Did this not signify that thousands of cultivators had died without seeing the Queen Mother Of The West in the end. Xuanxuzi was not convinced constructing a prayer palace could move the Queen Mother Of The West.
“It’s not like there isn’t a way.” Qi Lin shook his head.
“Qi Lin, do you have other solutions?” Shi Xuan unknowingly treated Qi Lin as her hope.
Qi Lin said: “Since this place has thousands of ruins and there are records of people crossing the Weak River, this means someone has made it. There must be records about how somewhere among these ruins. We need only find this leftover information and analyze them. Perhaps we can find the way to cross the Weak River.”
Hou Yi thought for a moment: “Then we should move as quickly as possible.”
