Flooding of the Northern Primordial was merely the beginning?
Bai Ze’s words made Qi Lin furrow his brow. It seemed that there was a deeper meaning to this. “Lady Bai, perhaps you could elaborate?”
Bai Ze shook her head: “I am not sure of the details at all, but these floods were deliberately initiated by someone.”
“And just who could be so vicious. The floods have lasted years, bringing disaster to millions of the Northern Primordial’s people. The people are in a terrible situation with no way to live. Even if they were a sage, for someone to commit such evil, they would surely be punished.” Hou Ji was endlessly indignant.
“As Lady Bai Ze has seen, the force of these floods has already submerged the Northern Primordial. Anyone with a conscience should be thinking of a way to stop this disaster. We sought out Lady Wanfang because we heard you were all-knowing and all-powerful. Yu The Great’s flood control efforts have already been exhausted to no avail. Can it be that Lady Wanfang will just sit and watch as the Northern Primordial’s people suffer?” Qi Lin was stirred to righteous indignation, his every word resonating with conviction, as if refusal would incite guilt in a person.
Bai Ze’s white pupils were blank. She quietly pondered for a while.
“The so-called Knower Of All Things Bai Ze turned out to be full of hot air, huh.” Nezha twitched her mouth.
“Lady Bai Ze, please help the Northern Primordial navigate this crisis.” Hou Ji knelt and pleaded.
“Minister of King Yu, Wanfang cannot bear this.” Bai Wanfang stepped forward and lifted Hou Ji to her feet.
“If Your Distinguished Self does not aid the Northern Primordial, Hou Ji cannot bear to go on living.” The floods in the Northern Primordial were related to saving the common people. Hou Ji changed from her usual shyness, her attitude becoming very resolute and sincere.
“Very well. This Young Lord’s words are indeed true…The floods are not originally heaven’s will. Wanfang shall help everyone see just what is the matter with this flood.” Bai Wanfang softly sighed.
Qi Lin and Hou Ji were very grateful.
Bai Wanfang waded into Yunmeng Lake. The surface of the dark green waters automatically transformed into lotus leaves that supported the girl’s light footsteps. With every step, another lotus leaf would appear, a very beautiful scene to watch.
She walked into the lake, clasping her hands together in prayer
Spirit-light gushed forth from the center of the formation like a spring, becoming countless strange bird scripts that flew around her. The girl softly chanted, and these wondrous scripts began to transform, becoming like a series of portraits spreading across a scroll. Bai Ze’s pure white pupils showed strange changes at this time; many fantastical scenes appeared in these eyes.
It was like she could see the future through these scripts.
Qi Lin knew she was casting a spell, so he quietly stood guard nearby along with Qi Qi and the others.
“Hou Ji, stand up.” Qi Lin lifted Hou Ji up.
“All our hopes for the Northern Primordial’s disaster rest on Bai Ze.” Hou Ji nervously held Qi Lin’s hand.
Qi Lin could see that this girl cared for the common people, that she had a compassionate heart.
“Since Bai Ze knows these floods are not that normal, she should be able to discover something.” Qi Lin’s gaze swept towards the praying girl, worrying about something else. “The Register Of Deities has revived…She said that just now, like she was a bit frightened…”
“The emergence of the Register Of Deities always produces many phenomena, this is not unusual.” Nezha disagreed. She chuckled: “The Central Plains Divine Court was originally a struggle between the Three Doctrines. I heard from Master that currently, Zhunti Daoren has established the Western Sect to participate in the Divine Court.”
“The Western Sect…Does the Central Plains Divine Court have it?” Yu Shiqie was a bit astonished.
“Of course.”
“The Northern Province has shadows of the Western Sect. It is said that the promises of paradise and sainthood in the afterlife have converted many.” Yu Shiqie had heard of this.
“Back then the Imemmorial Royal Family unified Primordial World under the slogan of ‘everyone is an emperor.’ Now, the Western Sect’s ‘sainthood in the next life’ is even more ingenious.” Qi Lin laughed. “I fear that will attract much more people.”
Nezha was not too clear on this. She was not very knowledgeable about the Three Doctrines, the Western Sect even less so.
“However, if we cannot pass the Register Of Deities’ numerous calamities, every religion will be destroyed, regardless.”
“En.”
Qi Lin and Nezha chatted about some Eastern Continent matters. The Great Primordial Eastern Continent was Primordial World’s most prosperous, richer than even the Northern Continent, for it gathered Primordial World’s most primordial spirit-qi, the power of heaven and earth, and even the essence of the sun and moon, giving all Divine Names satisfaction and doubling the gains from their cultivation.
Not only were DIvine Names numerous there, the number of cultivator sects was staggering.
Jixia Academy and the Hongdu Gate School were known as Primordial World’s two great academic institutions, nurturing the talents of Heaven and Earth. Cultivators, lay people, Star Names, and even Divine Names all train in these places. The renowned Four Dukes of Primordial World came from these places. Speaking of, Nezha was still a student of the Jixia Academy.
“I must go pay a visit to Confucius when I have the chance.” Qi Lin’s eyes lit up.
“Hmph, Qi Lin, so you want to learn her chatterbox sermons to deceive little girls, huh.” Nezha made a face.
“You think yourself so smart.”
After a long time, the rings of script-light floating above Bai Ze gradually faded. Slowly, the air returned to tranquility. The light in Bai Ze’s eyes faded with the portrait.
“Lady Bai Ze, what did you learn? Can the floods be controlled?” Hou Ji nervously asked.
Bai Wanfang’s complexion was slightly pale, her eyes whiter than ice, brighter than snow. She hesitated.
“This flood cannot be controlled by ordinary measures.”
“Then is there a way?”
“Four million five hundred thousand li to the southwest, there is a mountain known as Changyou. It is barren save for an abundance of water. Over there is a monster that looks like a monkey with four ears. It itself is also known as the Changyou,1 and its cry is like a chant. Its sighting portends great floods in the world.
“Then three million li to the northeast is Mount Shan, which is rich in gold and jade. Over there is a monster shaped like a boar but with a human face. Red fur covers its body, and it is known as the Heyu.2 It sounds like a crying infant. It is a beast that devours people, bugs, and serpents. Its sighting portends great floods in the world.”
“At the Northern Primordial’s Jade Mountain, there is a monster shaped like a pheasant but red. It is known as the Shengyu,3 and it sounds like a deer. Its sighting portends great floods in that country.”
“At Mount Chongwu, there is a monster shaped like a duck but with only one wing and one eye, only capable of flight with a matching half. It is known as the Manman,4 and its sighting portends great floods in the world.”
“Fanyu…”5
“Fuzhu…”6
“Huashe…”7
“Lingling…”8
“Their appearance portends flooding in the world.”
Bai Ze’s gaze was clear. She spoke neither quickly nor slowly. Altogether, she named eight Great Demons – Changyou, Shengyu, Manman, Heyu, Lingling, Huashe, Fanyu, and Fuzhu.
These eight Great Demons were located in the Northern Primordial’s Later Heaven positions of Zhen East, Dui West, Li South, Kan North, Qian Northwest, Kun Southwest, Gen Northeast, and Xun Southeast. They were working in concert to cast a spell, a strange formation. It was precisely this formation that created the last ten years of anomalies in the Northern Primordial, the never-ending downpour, the flooding of everything under the heavens.
“This formation will be complete after a little more than sixty days. By then, the flooding in the Northern Primordial cannot be stopped, the consequences too horrible to contemplate.”
Bai Ze’s tone faintly trembled.
“What? Sixty more days?” Hou Ji was shocked.
“Then does that mean so long as we can stop this formation’s competition, we can quell the floods?” Qi Lin promptly asked.
Bai Ze answered: “Yes, but that requires slaying all eight Demons and retrieving their Demon Cores. So long as one Demon lives, this flood formation will not be able to be broken.”
“This is a bit problematic.”
Qi Lin’s brow creased tightly. The eight positions that Bai Ze mentioned were millions of li away, an extreme distance, practically encircling the entire Northern Primordial. Even with an art that could traverse a million li in an instant, they could not possibly slay all Eight Demons in a mere month, and to be able to work together to unleash such a massive formation, it seemed these eight Demon Beasts were very extraordinary.
“We must hurry back and discuss with Wenming. It seems we must divide and conquer if we care to be able to handle the Eight Demons.” Qi Lin immediately said.
Hou Ji nodded furiously.
“Many thanks to Little Sister Wanfang for lending your aid. If we can quell the floods, it will be all thanks to Knower Of All Things Bai Ze.” Qi Lin expressed his gratitude.
“Wanfang can only help up to here…” Bai Ze hesitated: “This flood formation is very unusual. Everyone, please, be careful.”
“Thank you for your concern.”
After thanking her, Qi Linin’s group turned and did not delay in leaving Yunmeng Lake. Bai Ze retracted the magical energy of the Mirror Of All Demons, Ghosts, And Immortals, allowing them a clear path ahead. The moment the endless white mist swallowed Qi Lin’s back, the white pupils of the girl standing in the lake suddenly became even brighter. Her gaze was clear as the lake, reflecting the peacock on Qi Lin’s shoulder…
“Ai…”
She let out an almost inaudible sigh.
…
The thick white mist receded, and very quickly, Qi Lin’s party were already leaving Yunmeng Lake.
Qi Lin summoned the Wind Rain Boat and prepared to reconvene with Yu The Great, yet Hou Ji did not board the boat. “Hou Ji, hurry and get on.”
“Qi Lin, you go back and inform King Yu of the situation. I…I do not want to go back.”
“What are you thinking?” Qi Lin was taken aback. He knew that Hou Ji was not a coward.
Hou Ji said: “Bai Ze just said that there is a Demon known as the Manman. If I set out from here, it will probably take only a half month. I will go kill it then return to the tribe.”
Qi Lin immediately realized that Hou Ji was planning to make every second count. If they were to hurry back first and then set out to exterminate the demons, that would increase the time necessary drastically; it would be completely too late. She could save the most time she could by doing this instead. “Then I’ll go with you.”
“Absolutely not. If you and I go together, then return to inform King Yu, that will be too late.” Hou Ji promptly refused: “I am a minister of King Yu. I am Hou Ji, God of Farming. I can handle a mere Demon.”
Qi Lin recalled that when he first saw her, she was nearly killed by several Blaze Eyes. He emphatically disagreed to letting her kill the Demon on her own, but Hou Ji’s gaze was unwavering. No one could persuade her to change her mind.
“Then how about this. Nezha, can you help me with something?” Qi Lin suggested an alternative.
“You want me to help you pick up girls? Then you owe Nezha a very big favor.” Little Nezha chuckled.
“No problem. Chang, go together with them, then I can be at ease.” Qi Lin said.
“No need. There really is no need. My ‘Bountiful Harvest’ truly can kill a Demon. I am not a weak woman.” Hou Ji was worried.
“Either you come back with me safely, or you agree to my condition.” Qi Lin’s attitude was very overbearing.
Hou Ji paused but did not say anything else.
Changxi asked: “Husband, then you…”
“I have Qi Qi, no need to worry. Go back and discuss with Yu The Great on how to dispatch these Water Demons as soon as possible. Nezha is young, and I worry for her. Changxi, if you stay with them, I can rest easy.” Qi Lin gently exhorted.
Changxi, knowing the severity of the issue, did not hesitate.
Qi Lin gave the Wind Rain Boat to them, “Then we had better hurry. You go and report to King Yu, I will go kill the Manman.” Hou Ji hurriedly said.
“Yes.”
Just as they were about to set out, a mist suddenly rose over the plains, and countless Flying Swords hovered in the air like stars.
“The Heavenly Decree Palace is at work, none of you should even think of leaving!”
A cold voice shouted, and a group of cultivators emerged from the fog.
