Chapter 10: Soft

Three days later, Shang Pixiu Tribe.

Elder Shang Qi sat straight and tall. To his left and right were four sequentially arranged seats, distinguishing the Pixiu Tribe’s Four Great Elders. Behind Shang Qi’s seat was an old banner. This banner was suffused with a thick, earthly qi. In the center was a black and white pixiu curled into the Yin Yang symbol.

The banner flapped fiercely in the wind. A black and white qi surrounded the entire area, making these competition grounds quiet as a ruin.

Shang Wei glanced at the banner, his eyes slightly aglow.

The tribe’s more than three hundred members were all gathered at the competition grounds. Bustling with activity, they all were in spirited discussion; the banner guardian was very important and significant to the tribe. Not only could they personally receive the magic treasure Pixiu Banner’s true legacy to cultivate, they could also become the favored person of the tribe’s elders. Originally, everyone felt that Shang Yangjun would have no problems standing out, after all, she was a genius who, after the age of two, comprehended military tactics and trained in various martial arts. Afterwards, she engaged in mortal combat and slayed countless wild beasts. At such a tender age, she had already become famous among the Ten Thousand Beasts Barbarians’ Twelve Tribes, without ever suffering a defeat.

If Shang Yangjun could obtain the Pixiu Banner to cultivate, she would undoubtedly have the qualifications to step on the the Core Path and enter Golden Core Bagua Realm.

Everyone in the tribe hoped the girl could win.

Comparable to Shang Yangjun, who had a halo about her, Shang Xuan was a bit unremarkable in contrast. He was tribe member who was discovered and retrieved from a wolf den. Later, after Shang Xuan’s adoptive father was eaten by a wild beast during a hunt, the boy was all alone. Because Shang Xuan was unable to cultivate qi and step onto the “martial path” from the very start, he was gradually treated as an object of ridicule in the village.

For someone like him to suddenly return and even become one of the final contenders for the banner, everyone was a bit suspicious.

Then again, there were times when Shang Xuan was infuriated to the point it was terrifying. His eyes would be blood-red, like a crazed wolf, making even Qi Refinement Fourth and Fifth Deva cultivators not dare approach him.

“Yangjun, be careful. This Shang Xuan has wolf blood running through his veins. He is very savage, you must not show mercy.” Shang Yangjun’s mother helped fix her daughter’s hairpin as she nagged on and on.

“Mother, don’t listen to the nonsense of the other tribe members. Shang Xuan doesn’t have wolf blood.” Shang Yangjun defended Shang Xuan.

But her mother would not listen. Having lived among the barbarians for so long, this woman was deeply aware of the dangers in the wildlands. “If he doesn’t have wolf blood, then how could he have suddenly defeated Ci’er. Everyone says that if Shang Xuan didn’t receive a lucky encounter, then perhaps the Great Shaman1 bloodline has awakened in him. This is the reason why he could defend against a Tier Two ability with just his physical body.” The woman showed a fearful expression. The Great Shamans were the most fearsome clan in Primordial World. Legend said they were born from Pangu’s blood and were blessed with innately boundless strength. They were capable of lifting divine cauldrons weighing ten thousand catties and of exerting control over every kind of Fierce Beast.

The Great Shaman clan did not refine qi; they refined blood, bones, flesh, marrow, hair, and more. In short, once they were infuriated, no power could stand up against them.

“The Great Shaman clan resides in Northern Primordial. This is a distance of millions upon millions of kilometers. And when the Great Shamans invaded Central Earth2 five hundred years ago, the ruler of Central Earth’s Divine Kingdom dispatched the Five Emperors Great Army to annihilate the Great Shamans. With even the Seven Ancestors all dead, there has been no trace of the Great Shamans in Primordial ever since.”

“This is not for certain. Now that the Register Of Deities has opened, countless Divine Names have begun to be born and grow. They say that the Great Shamans’ Demonic Chiyou has also been born. Ai, this wolf child may have changed because of the Register Of Deities. That could be why he has his current cultivation.

“Daughter, you must not show mercy. If you lose, your future cultivation will be impeded.”

Shang Yangjun shook her head. She did not wish to listen to her mother any further.

Just as they were speaking, a clamor came from the crowd. Everyone turned their gazes to see a young man in hemp clothing appear at the village entrance and slowly walk in.

His pace was relaxed. One step could cover a stride of several zhang, as if he had shrunk the ground to a single inch.

“Why did this wolf child have to return.” Shang Yangjun’s mother did not have a very good impression of Shang Xuan. In her mind, she had always treated Shang Ci as her future son-in-law. To see Shang Xuan injure him so severely, she had severe loathing in her heart for Shang Xuan.

When Shang Qi rose to his feet, the entire venue immediately fell silent.

“Shang Yangjun!”

“Shang Xuan!!”

“Disciples are present!!”

The two of them walked in tandem to the front.

“Three thousand years have elapsed since the former sovereigns passed the Pixiu Banner on to our tribe to stand guard over the Ten Thousand Beasts Barbarians. Now, the king of Shang has once again convened the Ten Thousand Beasts Unbounded. The banner guardian this time must safely protect the banner on its way towards Zhaoge. Do you two understand?”

“Disciples understand.”

Shang Qi turned and began to proceed with the banner ceremony. The stocky warriors to his side pounded their animal hide drums with all their might. These drums were created from the hides of the Rank Three Bright Fire-eyes while the drumsticks were the thigh bones of a Fierce Beast, which unleashed earsplitting roars when they struck the drum, like a tiger roar echoing through the mountain forest. With every strike, flames spurt from the drums, making the drumbeat extremely  intense.

The Pixiu Tribe was pious, bowing and kneeling, their heads pointed in worship towards the east of Yin Shang Kingdom as they muttered an incantation.

“What are they doing now.” On a tall tree, Sun Wukong was unable to understand what they were doing, yet she detected some qi vaguely surrounding that banner.

“The Ten Thousand Beasts Barbarians’ Twelve Tribes all belong to the Yin Shang. Each tribe has a banner bestowed upon them by the ruler of the Yin Shang Kingdom, and one must offer sacrifices to these banners in the Yin Shang Kingdom.” The tiny white ape very thoroughly understood the large and small trifles of the Ten Thousand Beasts Barbarians.

“Is this banner so incredible?” Qi Qi cocked her head.

“Of course. Five hundred years ago, when the Great Shaman Clan invaded, they relied on the Ten Thousand Beasts Boundless Banners to protect the Yin Shang Kingdom, establishing heroic feats.”

“Hm.”

After the ceremony, Shang Qi formally declared the start: “There is only one rule: no magic treasures are to be used, and no killing, either. The one unable to continue fighting loses!”

“As you command.”

The drums stopped, and the winds calmed.

Even the sound of breathing had disppeared from the world.

The two of them stood face to face like opposite peaks, staring at one another.

“Three days. Your aura has strengthened even more.” Shang Yangjun sensed the change in Qi Lin’s True Qi.

“Not bad. I cultivated another Deva these past three days.” Qi Lin grinned. With Sun Wukong’s Divine Energy contract, Qi Refinement Realm cultivation was already very easy for him now. With just a little more time, the cultivators’ first and most difficult “Qi Refinement Ninth Deva” Realm was something he could easily break through.

This was the power of the Register Of Deities’ Divine Names.

No wonder they became Primordial World’s rulers!

“Shang Xuan, don’t act so conceited. To have refined another Deva in just three days, I don’t believe you.”

“Hmph, bullshit. Little Sister Yangjun, don’t believe him, he is a liar.”

“Big Sister, teach him a good lesson, let him face reality.”

The disciples below began to cheer for the tribe’s number one girl. There was practically no one on Qi Lin’s side.

Their momentum was vast, earth-shattering.

Shang Qi did not stop them, but he quietly watched. “Hm?” The man’s brow creased. The young man on the platform was much more steady than he had imagined, as if he was someone who had experienced countless trials. These derisive youngsters continued to add more jokes.

“Little Sister, en garde.” Qi Lin amicably hinted.

Perhaps she was affected by Qi Lin’s composure, but Shang Yangjun was also very cautious. The girl took quick, small steps. The two of them circled the ring like two beasts, waiting and moving, biding for their chance to hunt and strike.

Shang Yangjun slowly circulated the True Qi in her body. The Primordial True Qi flowed over her, turning from trickle to a torrent.

Just when Qi Lin shifted his footing, the girl finally made her move.

She stomped, splitting the ground. She suddenly unleashed her power, like a pixiu roaring. Qi Lin was shaken and blinded by this force. The girl directly crossed the thirty meter gap between them, closing the distance to arrive in front of him. Her fingers were extended, chopping like a blade.

This was the Pixiu Tribe’s most common Pixiu Power Palm.3

The clan practiced the Pixiu Roar and the Pixiu Power Palm as a very standard combination; use the roar to first stun the opponent and deprive them of their senses, ruining their focus. Then, attack by exploiting this opening. This was sufficient to achieve an instant victory.

But the girl’s True Qi was frighteningly strong, already refined to the cusp of opening her Heavenly Spirit meridians and reaching Qi Refinement Seventh Deva peak. Her combination attack was even more practiced, even more terrifying than anyone else’s.

A distance of thirty meters. She did not close it with just a single charge or a single step. Under the girl’s diligent practice of footwork, she closed the distance instantly, practically as if there was no distance.

This sort of attack was even more deadly.

“Take this!!!”

Qi Lin was quiet. From the first glance, he could sense the power behind Shang Yangjun’s palm.

Enough to destroy indiscriminately.

Qi Lin activated the Two Yins Two Yangs, and his Fifth Deva True Qi became Seventh Dev. He raised his left hand against this attack, sweeping it outwards, a completely unremarkable palm move. The pair’s palm chops clashed, and their bones let out crisp popping sounds that made people’s blood run cold.

What clashed in the palm chops were their cultivation, determination, and courage. Whoever was the first to falter would lose.

Their palms sliced against each other like blades. Gradually, blood trickled from their palms, but neither took a step back, as if in a frenzy. The Seventh Deva True Qi attacks were incomparably earsplitting.

One hundred strikes later, Shang Yangjun’s expression hardened, but she did not concede defeat at all.

“I’ll be a bit more gentlemanly.” Qi Lin stepped back and retracted his palm.

“In the great wilds, being a gentleman will only cost you your life.” Shang Yangjun hardly bought this. In truth, her palm attacks had a followup. What she waited for was the opponent to take a step back. The girl then stepped forward, her legs like a pixiu’s pace as her palm swung the other way to strike Qi Lin backhanded.

This maneuver was like Shang Yangjun wanted to push a mountain aside.

Mountain-pushing Palm!!

Shang Yangjun automatically proceeded to the trump card she created after the combination attack, something exceptionally fierce. After the opponent evaded the palm strike, they would suffer heavy injury to this formidable palm technique, no matter what.

“Shang Yangjun is too amazing, to actually create a complementary combination of the Pixiu Roar and palm chop drills, perfect, so perfect.

“This Shang Xuan is done fore.”

“Pity, he truly shouldn’t have challenged Big Sister.”

The other disciples were in awe of Shang Yangjun’s talent. To create a martial art skill required boundless training, experience, and talent.

“As expected of Yangjun.”

Against the Mountain-pushing Palm’s intense True Qi, Qi Lin slightly smiled. Fortunately, he already knew that Shang Yangjun was not so simple. His left hand shook, and his True Qi flowed like a river towards the Mountain-pushing Palm.

Qi Lin’s Dual Modes Seal was already practiced to a certain level. His left and right hands demonstrated hardness and softness together simultaneously, easy and smooth.

Although Shang Yangjun’s technique was strong, Qi Lin was still confident he could dispel it. His left hand embodied softness and punched through the hard True Qi to attack the girl. Shang Yangjun was caught unprepared. The girl exclaimed. Qi Lin felt his hand latch onto something very, very soft.

“Huh?”

Qi Lin was stunned, gasping before the girl could.
