Ten days later.
They penetrated deeper and deeper into the Western Sea. All along, the whale swam unimpeded.
At last, after ten long days of endlessness, a small change appeared in the Western Sea. A land mass appeared in the distance, a continuous and undulating series of mountains. The silhouette of the peaks were mostly concealed in fog such that Qi Lin could not discern real from unreal, but he could sense this mountain range was extremely magnificent and grand. The endless Western Sea appeared slightly miniscule under these mountains.
Qi Lin showed an excited expression. No matter what, to be able to see land was always a bit of a relief.
But the dragon whale was no longer willing to advance once it reached a certain distance from the landmass. No matter how Qi Lin commanded or controlled it, it was to no avail.
Qi Lin had just thought of using the Escaping Heavenly Shuttle when the dragon whale was a bit impatient at this time. It blew an enormous waterspout from its blowhole and rotated its entire body, carrying QI Lin along as it submerged. Qi Lin and Qi Qi were caught off guard and were taken underwater by the whale. That waterspout became a long ribbon that wrapped around Qi Lin and Qi Qi, forming an enormous eddy.
In any case, the dragon whale was a fierce Demon Beast, and the ability it used was vast and formidable. Qi Qi inherently loathed water, but to be dragged under without being able to react, this enormous whirlpool was like a meatgrinder about to pulverize the two of them. Qi Lin roared and circulated his Four Yins Four Yangs power. The Dual Modes Seal’s gentleness and strength harmonized, Yin and Yang combined, and his hands cut through the whirlpool.
The dragon whale flipped, its enormous body sinking like a ten thousand ton boulder. A heavy water pressure rolled over, throwing Qi Lin and Qi Qi out. Then, the dragon whale sped away, quickly fleeing into the depths.
Qi Lin cursed to himself. He grabbed Qi Qi with one hand as that whirlpool and water spout carried the two of them towards land. The powerful suction force made Qi Lin feel like he was in a meat grinder.
After the dizziness from heaven and earth spinning around passed, a bright flash flared before their eyes.
Qi Lin opened his eyes, and he was shocked by the scene before his eyes.
Some distance away in the sea, he spotted a curvaceous, mermaid-like young lady. Her figure was delicate, her legs slender, and jade-like skin caressed by the ocean. The girl’s long hair drifted like kelp, but these were nothing. Around the girl were ten jade plates in silver light that were like the bright moon reflected in the sky, appearing extremely beautiful.
“Ah.” The girl sensed a shadow in the distance and was shocked.
The ten lights surrounding her immediately extinguished. They subsequently became ten arrows that shot towards Qi Lin with unstoppable Divine Energy.
“Hè.”
Qi Qi opened her eyes from her dizziness. She had been left dizzy and agitated from the seawater, and her chest was filled with evil qi that had nowhere to vent. All of a sudden, she sensed danger. The evil qi in her chest flowed out, and the Great Sage Equal Of Heaven grit her teeth. Maliciously, she took up the Meteoric Iron Divine Staff, her surging evil qi churning the sea like black water.
“No!” Qi Lin hastily rushed to stop her.
Yet Qi Qi did not listen. She swung and swung her staff, shattering the incoming beams.
She swung the staff at the girl’s head. The girl’s delicate body in her eyes was like a skeleton, nothing to evoke feelings of protectiveness.
The girl felt the seawater suddenly darken. Then, the flaring evil qi attacked like a tidal wave, frightening the girl and draining the color from her face. That evil qi was like a malevolent demon god. The ten moon-lights dispersed, and the Meteoric Iron Divine Staff’s wind froze the ocean.
The staff-wind reached the girl before the staff itself. The young girl’s complexion paled, and she was suddenly disoriented by Qi Qi’s overwhelming evil qi.
“Bang.”
Qi Lin loosed an arrow that caused Qi Qi’s attack to miss.
Qi Qi turned her head back, her expression contorted and confused.
Qi Lin stood before her and placed a hand on her forehead. His Divine Crest appeared as he poured in Divine Energy, calming her. To watch a girl bathe only for someone else to attack was simply deranged.
“That’s enough! We are leaving.” He scolded her.
He hoisted the girl up into his arms. Having been yelled at by Qi Lin, Qi Qi was jolted awake. She stowed her Divine Staff and dashed out to the sea.
…
Qi Lin carried the girl to the bank and covered her with clothes from his storage bag. Seeing she was still unconscious, and afraid something might happen to her, he decided to stick around. He looked around. This mountain range was extremely vast, like a continent with gargantuan trees, luxuriant vegetation, simply beautiful beyond imagination.
Qi Lin recalled there were no other landmasses in the ten thousand li since he left the Fog Spirit Sea. Who knew where he was now.
Qi Lin used the Escaping Heavenly Shuttle to survey the surroundings from above. The trees were tall enough to reach the sky, endless in number. At the other end of the forest was an enormous mountain, indescribably so, and it was white as a glacier.
The surrounding forest was verdant, its trees towering into the sky, their limbs flourishing. Many of the trees were very peculiar, and in the midst of the forest, he could see rising wisps of smoke. Clearly, this landmass had a village of sorts, and this made Qi Lin feel great relief. A village signified a population, and a population meant there was someone who understood this place. Perhaps they had a way to reach the Eastern Sea.
“What’s going on?”
Qi Lin circled around the sky using the Escaping Heavenly Shuttle and sensed that his body was very heavy. The Escaping Heavenly Shuttle’s magical energy seemed to be sapping away. No matter how he imbued magical energy into it, it was no use.
With no other choice, Qi Lin could only give up.
Just then, the girl stirred awake.
Upon opening her eyes, the girl let out a shriek.
“You’re awake.” Qi Lin was in the middle of roasting a wild pheasant as he rubbed his ears.
“Ah!!” Seeing a man, the girl screamed again. She pulled the clothes up to cover her chest as she stared warily at him.
“If I was a bad guy, you wouldn’t even be able to scream.” Qi Lin kindly said.
Qi Qi sat beside him, wafting the pheasant’s aroma. She disdainfully pursed her lips.
“You…are…” The girl timidly asked.
“I’m called Qi Lin. Qi as in ‘a gentleman is wise and virtuous,’ and Lin as in qilin.” Qi Lin introduced himself, then he said to Qi Qi: “This is my little sister, Qi Qi. We were passing along the beach, saw you were in danger and rescued you. If we committed some discourtesy, we ask for your understanding.”
The girl blushed. Looking at these incongruently long clothes, she immediately understood what had happened.
“Call me Chang.”1
“Chang?”
“En.”
“Sister Chang, why are you bathing in these waters alone, it’s too dangerous.” Qi Lin very familiarly built rapport. Qi Qi could not help but roll her eyes.
“I…don’t know either…This place is supposed to be very safe.” Chang softly said.
“Thank you, Big Brother Lin, for the kindness of saving my life. Little Sister is endlessly grateful.” Chang bowed.
“Come sit over here.” Qi Lin hinted to a spot by the fire.
At this time, it was already dark. A cool breeze blew, making the girl shiver. She hesitated a moment. In the end, Chang shuffled delicately over towards a very warm seat. The girl smelled the savory aroma of the pheasant and swallowed back her saliva.
“This is ‘white crown long-tailed pheasant’…It is very difficult to capture.” She covered her mouth when she saw the pile of feathers nearby.
“Indeed, I spent a long time…Have a taste.” Qi Lin ripped off a thigh and passed it to her.
Cultivators generally abstained from eating mortal foods during fasting, but there were some precious medical foods that they were unable to refuse. These spirit-qi foodstuffs could replenish qi and nourish the body. Growing yin and supplementing yang was significantly beneficial to a cultivator’s training.
The white crown long-tailed pheasant was a Spirit Bird. Their senses of hearing and sight were extremely acute, and they fled immediately at the slightest movement. They were well-disposed towards running and flight. Their flight capabilities were also formidable and long-lasting, swift in speed as well. They were particularly fast when gliding from higher altitude downwards, and they also could fly upwards across a relatively long-distance. During high-speed flight they could also make use of their long tails to control their direction and to rapidly descend. Consequently, they could shuttle through the forest free and uninhibited; they were extremely difficult to capture.
“How could I accept this.” Chang hesitantly said.
“This is my first time here, and I don’t know this place too well. Consider this a bribe to you, Little Sister.” Qi Lin calmly said.
Chang said, “Oh.” She watched Qi Qi help herself to a large piece of the bird and could not resist the temptation. She accepted the leg and ripped off a small piece, elegantly eating it.
Qi Lin asked his questions in a roundabout way. Chang was evidently a bit naive. After wolfing down a few pieces of bird, she honestly treated Qi Lin like an older brother, divulging anything and everything to him. Qi Lin was even very skeptical whether she would reveal her three measurements if he asked.
However, Qi Lin finally got a clear picture of what this land in the Western Sea was thanks to her answers.
Known as Wanqiu Island,2 this was the last landmass along the edge of the Western Sea. Wanqiu Island’s surrounding hundreds of millions of li had no other islands, just some void rifts. Lucky cultivators that passed through the rifts occasionally came to this place. Other than them, one would have to be like Qi Lin and ride a boat, only arriving after years and some good luck.
What made Qi Lin depressed was that there was no way to go to the Eastern Sea from Wanqiu Island. It was not even clear where in the world Wanqiu Island was at.
But Wanqiu Island had several ancient villages. Some were even descendants of peoples from overseas, others of bloodlines from the Great Primordial, while others still were cultivators seeking refuge. They had rooted themselves here for thousands of years. Perhaps they would understand even more. Hearing her say this, Qi Lin was quite relieved.
Due to Wanqiu being an extremely ancient island, it was practically untouched by calamities of Primordial World and was fraught with danger. At night, not even Primordial Infant cultivators dared to rashly intrude into the forest. Chang suggested that they set out on the second day.
Tonight, Qi Lin stared at the distant snowy mountain, unable to voice opposition.
Day two.
The sun’s light rose from the surface of the sea and sprinkled down its radiance. Qi Lin noticed tat this sun was a bit unusual. Generally, the sun was red or orange-red, but here, the sun was a brilliant white. However, it was quite warm.
After settling breakfast, Qi Lin, Qi Qi, and Chang ventured forth.
The brush here was very thick, the bugs innumerable, and the mosquitoes were the size of one’s palm. However, the group was rather safe, for they did not encounter too much trouble. Chang mentioned that they were lucky. This region was formerly an Immemorial Demon Beast’s domain, but it had been slain a decade prior. In truth, the forest outside Wanqiu Village was the territory of a ferocious Demon Beast. Its cultivators was above Primordial Infant stage, and it was very dangerous.
“Right, Sister Chang, what is that mountain?” Walking past a luxuriant grove, Qi Lin looked at that faintly visible mountain in the distance. It grew taller and taller, towering over the neighboring peaks like a pillar extending towards the sky. It was very spectacular, and he could not see the peak when he looked up.
“Is Big Brother actually unaware?” Chang was very astonished.
“What, is it really famous?” QI Lin asked.
“Of course. Cultivators only come to Wanqiu Island to go to this mountain. Its one of Primordial World’s Five Great Divine Mountains.” Chang nodded and softly explained.
Qi Lin’s heart froze, and he recalled something.
“That is Western Kunlun!!”
